Introduction

My name is Taarieq, I’m 26 years old, and I’m currently working at Devoteam as a Senior Data consultant. Before joining Devoteam, I was working in Aviation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to confront the harsh reality of a shrinking industry and a dwindling job market. After considering my options and what I enjoy doing, I decided to make a career pivot and transition into the field of data. I worked on my data engineering skills and joined Devoteam after gaining some experience. Since joining Devoteam, I’ve been helping our clients with their data related problems, and improving my own skills.

What is your role at Devoteam?

I’m working as a data consultant and help clients with their data related problems. At my current project I’m responsible for managing the data platform of the client in Google Cloud Platform.

The first months at Devoteam – what was your experience?

I started working at Devoteam in the middle of the “COVID-19” pandemic. While being unable to visit the office and meet up with colleagues, I still managed to meet a lot of colleagues online. In the first weeks after joining I started helping colleagues out on their projects. At one of the projects, I provided assistance with relinking PowerBI dashboards to new database sources. Another project I helped out with was performing a data migration from a SQL database to No-SQL database. In a timespan of a couple of months I managed to gain a lot of experience with new technologies, and land an assignment at a client.

What are you doing now at Devoteam?

My current client is a care provider, which is developing their own web application with the use of Google Cloud Platform. in this project here I’m responsible for managing the data platform of the application. I’ve been working on improving the data pipeline, providing the client with insights in their data, and solving data related problems with the use of analytics and programming.

In addition to the consultancy I’m doing for the clients, I’m also guiding new futures within Devoteam, and working on data streaming related projects using Databricks.

What is the achievement at Devoteam that you are most proud of?

I’ve had multiple achievements, while working at Devoteam, that I’m proud of. To name one, I’ve helped my current client with setting up an anonymized test environment, which is a reflection of production data used for testing and development. This really improved the development process and greatly reduced the amount of bugs occurring.

What are the most important skills you need for your position?

I would name the soft skills, such as problem solving, collaboration, and communication as the most important ones. The tools and technologies keep evolving, however skills required to use them are roughly the same. The other skills I would name are cloud technologies, data analysis and visualization, and lastly programming.

Overall, a data consultant needs to have a combination of technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills to effectively work with clients and provide insights that drive business success.

When you’re not busy with work, what are you doing in your free time?

I’ve recently picked up bouldering as a hobby. It’s a great workout, which lets me work on functional strength as well as problem solving skills while climbing to the last boulder. I also really like to travel, especially to places I’ve never been to. Last year, I went to Switzerland, Egypt, America, and Portugal. Other than that, I’m usually watching some TV-shows, reading books or hanging out with family or friends.

Conclusion

I was looking for an experienced organization where I could develop my own skills in working with the cloud, and got a lot more in return. I’ve been growing as a data consultant, while collaborating with a lot of young (international) professionals at Devoteam. If you’re looking for a place to develop yourself as well, Devoteam is continuously looking for new colleagues. Feel free to reach out!
