In this article, we touch upon how the usage cost of MuleSoft Anypoint and Azure Integration are calculated.
MuleSoft
MuleSoft has a subscription-based model where you buy services annually. API Management and Anypoint MQ (messaging) are examples of services. For the Cloud runtime environment, resource (compute) reservations are made measured in vCores.
Azure
For most services, Azure offers a Cloud-native pay-per-use pricing model: you pay for services that actually have transactions. A notable exception to this are B2B services including XML schema validations for which an ‘Integration account’ is needed. These are billed by the hour (for the single-tenant standard Logic Apps the Integration account is no longer required for schema validations and transformations). For high transaction volumes, Azure offers dedicated (single-tenant) solutions such as the ‘Integration service environment’ (ISE) for Logic App and higher tiers for Service Bus.
Conclusion
The Azure approach fits better into a start-small / scale-up approach, while both are suitable for a plan-based approach. With transaction-based pricing, you need to realize that Azure will become less competitive with higher transaction volumes. For high transaction volumes and/or high-performance requirements, the dedicated (single-tenant) environments in Azure are used, for which capacity is reserved in advance. This is similar to the MuleSoft model.
