Chapter 7

API Management

Most organizations are pressured to deliver outstanding products/experiences and simplified services. Unfortunately, a lot of companies have limited IT capacity. With external pressure from demanding customers and fierce competitors, pushing for innovation, organizations struggle to keep up. This is often referred to as the ”IT delivery gap”, where the business demands and IT simply cannot deliver on every demand. To overcome that gap, organizations should adopt a new approach – from reactive to proactive by modernizing their legacy systems. Or simply create and use modern, documented, and reusable APIs.

API Management solutions

Some companies already give preference to reusable APIs- instead of writing code and rebuilding integrations from scratch. For every offer they have, they chose to compose applications and leverage APIs. However, most businesses do not have fast or easy ways to create APIs from their existing technologies. Leveraging the right API integration platform is the key.

Mulesoft API-led enables you to develop, manage, control, and even monetize APIs.

There are plenty of API management solutions available which give enterprises the ability to reuse the API integration assets. Managing all APIs on one central and visible platform helps organizations to reduce costs and improve time-to-market while keeping existing services safe and secure and with high performance.

In a nutshell, API Management allows you to:
“Build, consume and manage up-to-date APIs without the complexity of hand-coding and costs of ongoing maintenance”.

Dear integration, you’ve changed

Some organizations with a traditional architecture approach, especially the ones that use an iPaas (Integration Platform as a Service) to integrate applications and data by using an ESB (Enterprise Service Bus), create a dependence on their departments, lines of business, customers, and partners. Product development and releases are slowed down. Reaching (securely) outside firewalls for SaaS apps proved difficult. Not to mention connecting to a central, monolithic application server that has poor scalability, maintenance cost, and so on.

APIs bring improvement to the whole process of integration. A modern iPaaS (for example Mulesoft) that combines APIs and integration helps organizations to create APIs from existing connections, enabling them to incorporate and increase the power of SaaS and cloud applications. Creating, reusing, publishing, and managing APIs in one platform simplifies the process of development and enables businesses to self-serve and deliver more projects. Integrating separate systems is much simpler, and access greater.
